About 3 years ago, I went from being one of those people who could say they had absolutely no allergies (other than the lovely northern VA pollen, which I’m convinced EVERYONE is allergic to) to someone who couldn’t even look in the mirror without seeing hives all over, let alone go outside where nature could freely attack! Oh how I wish I knew then what I know now about essential oils! Let me just start out by saying that when I first decided to try essential oils for allergy support, I didn’t have very high expectations. I was just as skeptical as some of you probably are, but I figured it was worth a shot. And oh my goodness, it worked!! Let me fill you in on the back story before I jump into the oils:
when allergies took over my life
Before that Spring I never had to be cautious of what foods I ate in fear of having an allergic reaction. I could use any and all lotions, shampoos, and body washes. Until one day out of nowhere my wrists and hands were covered in itchy red and white rings. I figured it was just nothing, and that it would go away if I ignored it and tried not to scratch too much, but it didn’t. Actually, instead of going away, it spread up my arms, over my chest, across my back, and down my legs. It was awful, and I was itching like crazy!
After a few days, when I couldn’t handle the itchiness any longer and was afraid that I might actually have something contagious, I headed over to Patient First. After showing the doctor my hives + a million pictures I took of them, and answering a few questions, I was sent home with no diagnosis and a steroid pack that should clear it up in the next 5 days. It did. But not even a week later I was covered in hives again, so back to the doctor I went. Again, a steroid pack and a promise that it would go away, plus a referral to an allergist. I was terrified of going to the allergist, mostly because I was afraid they were going to tell me I was allergic to pineapples or something. But, after the hives came back AGAIN, I decided maybe finding out what was causing these SUPER ITCHY rings all over my body wouldn’t be such a bad idea.
After meeting with the allergist a few times, taking another steroid pack, and being injected with a steroid shot (ouch!!), he decided we should do a skin prick test. If you don’t know what that is, be SO THANKFUL! Basically, they stick a bunch of food/plant/everything allergens all over your back, draw all around them with
markers to label the areas, then stick you with a little needle to allow the solution to enter your body. After sitting there a while and feeling your back slowly break out in hives, they finally come back and check to see which allergens caused a breakout. And there you go, that’s what you’re allergic to! Turns out I’m NOT allergic to pineapples!! Praise God!! (He knew I would be miserable with out them!) Just Mangoes, some ingredients used in shampoos and body products, and basically every tree or plant known to man!
Obviously I couldn’t stay inside my house forever to avoid nature, so, I was put on Singulair, Zyrtec, and Claritin every single night + another dose of Zyrtec every morning. Seemed like a lot of medication, but I needed to get rid of the itchiness, so I started taking them. I went through the whole summer taking these medications and STILL breaking out in hives!! I barely spent any time outside, always wore long sleeves (because when you have a bunch of hives all over your body and go out in public, it tends to freak people out), and got used to being itchy. This went on for almost a year, until one day I realized how CRAZY it was that I was taking all of these medicines every single day, and they weren’t even resolving my issue! All they were doing was failing their attempt to get rid of my symptoms!
Essential Oils save the day
Here’s where it gets good: One day I remembered reading about essential oils on Pinterest! I started researching which Essential Oils supported allergies, read tons of stories of how people used oils daily to support various aspects of life, and decided I wasn’t out anything trying. So, after MUCH research, I ordered Young Living’s Premium Starter Kit (Best Deal EVER!) and a Breathe Again Roll-On! As soon as my package was delivered I rolled Breathe Again all over my chest and wrists, and started diffusing my lavender, lemon, and peppermint! As the days went on, I started noticing that I wasn’t feeling itchy as often, and eventually, the hives quit coming. At this point I was still taking all of the medications the doctor recommended, but I slowly started weening off of them (VERY SLOWLY), and now I don’t take ANY allergy medications, and I’m completely hive & itch free! I do occasionally get a few little irritated spots here and there, but I just whip out my Breathe Again, roll it on, and I’m back to normal!
My daily routine:
I’m in no way a doctor, and don’t feel that its safe to just quit taking medications, especially if you have severe allergies!! (Everyone’s body + situation is different!) But I 100% recommend starting to incorporate these oils into your daily life, and talking to your doctor to figure out what works for you personally!
If you have ANY questions at all, please ask! Essential Oils have helped our family in SO many ways, from allergy relief, to stomach pains, better sleep, muscle aches, the list goes on and on! I can’t imagine our lives without them! If you’re interested in getting started with essential oils, I reccommend starting with Young Living’s Premium Starter Kit, which comes with a diffuser, 11 of the most popular oils (including lemon, lavender, and peppermint!
