Repel Bugs Naturally
Chris and I are leaving tomorrow on a trip to Colorado with some of our close friends, and as we’re over here getting excited about all of the fun outdoorsy things we’ll be doing, I suddenly started repeating one word over and over in my mind: BUGS. It’s not that I don’t love the outdoors, I’m actually super excited about the hiking, white water rafting, and exploring of such a beautiful state, but one thing I’m never excited about when we plan a trip into nature, is bugs. Like seriously, if there were no such thing as bugs I would easily spend ALL my time outside enjoying God’s creation. But, since I know He created bugs for a reason, I guess I can live with them as long as they stay away from me!
getting rid of the bugs
I’ve never been a huge fan of bug spray. It stinks, it’s sticky, and you have to go in and take a shower as soon as you go inside because it’s just all around disgusting. Not to mention all of the horrible chemicals! So, I decided to make my own, all natural bug repellent made with Young Living EssentialOils! And the best part, not only will this make a great insect repellent, but we’ll also be getting ALL the benefits of the oils that we use! Win, Win!
Let’s talk about citronella for a sec. Did you know it was an Essential Oil? When I first started using oils I was actually surprised because I thought it was a chemical made specifically to get rid of bugs! Silly me! This oil has TONS of benefits other than just keeping nasty critters away!
+ Anti fungal, insect repellent, antibacterial, deodorant (Praise the LORD for this one during our hiking adventures!), and insecticidal.
+ May alleviate headaches, respiratory infections, neuralgia, fatigue, and oily skin!
+ Can be used to sanitize and deodorize surfaces.
+ Makes an excellent insect repellent when combined with Cedarwood!
This is obviously one of the most common insect repelling oils, but did you know there are so many more oils to deter those icky pests from bothering you??
+ Idaho tansy
Lucky for us Young Living has amazing blends of oils already mixed together so that we don’t have to add all of them individually! We’ll be using a blend called Purification, which is a blend of Citronella, Lemongrass, La
vandin, Rosemary, Melaleuca, and Myrtle; and Thieve’s, which is a blend of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary. There are multiple oils that help deter certain types of insects, so don’t worry that we don’t have every single oil added in this spray! Those bugs won’t be getting anywhere near you!
